Ava
I’m doing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Canterbury. I’m in my second year, majoring in Media and Communications, and minoring in Spanish.
I took two gap years after high school. I was about to finish school, and I was pretty good at everything, but there was no ‘one thing’ that stood out.
And I went… I know I like talking to people. What am I gonna do with that? I’m just gonna go travel. What’s stopping me? Nothing. I’ve got no debt; I’ve got no people who rely on me. I’m just going to go.
I think if I’d gone straight from high school to university, I would have dropped out. Looking back at how much I changed; the people I met and the kind of jobs I worked; really developed me to who I am right now. I think it gave me heaps of skills.
It’s really important to meet people and put yourself out there, you know? I wanted to come away from uni someone different than when I began, which is also why I shaved my head. I’ve always had really long, thick hair, and I’ve always been a bit annoyed by it, but I never noticed how annoyed until I shaved it all off!
I ended up in Christchurch, because I reckon it’s a big, upcoming city, majorly. And it just made sense to me. It’s so close to the mountains, and I like skiing and snowboarding, and I’ve got a big family connection here as well.

Live music is always fun on nights out. After working at the new stadium, which is great, me and my friend got our face painted like tigers, and we went out to the pub, and it was a great night. I’m enjoying! Yes, you could say, you could say!
I do reflect, and go, where am I now? How did I get here? I like being here right now.
I’m a bit confused where my degree is going to take me specifically, just because it is quite broad. I feel definitely concerned in some ways, specifically with the recent kind of change in the final year free. I’ve had quite a few friends who have recently graduated, and they cannot find jobs anywhere.
But I know I’ll be able to do something. I know I’ve been equipped with so many other skills.
I will find my way.
