Mike (and Ben)
“I’m a resident of Governors Bay. I’ve been there for 31 years. It’s the only place we’ve lived since I met my wife and finished travelling when we were younger. We settled in there, raised a family, it’s been home ever since.
Like most young Kiwis in their 20’s I didn’t spend much of that in New Zealand. My occupation is a travel agent so i’m quite well travelled, my favourite places are Botswana first equal with Iceland. I do prefer the natural environment rather than cities!
I’m a volunteer firefighter, I joined the brigade when I sold my business in town because they’re always short of people during the day. Being based there more of the day it’s easier. Now I just do contract work here and there, loving the challenge and change of new workplaces and organisations and the new people you meet.
I’m training at the moment for the Auckland Skytower fundraiser, for leukemia and blood cancer. New Zealand Firefighters from all round the country run up there as fast as they can in their BA and everything.
I’ve done all sorts of runs and things, nothing super major. I tend to just do it at my pace and in my time rather than being joined up to do something like the Queenstown Marathon. Mind you, I was just thinking as I jogged in I must look at taking my son on something like that, he’s just started to get quite fit, I think he’d enjoy that.
This is just one of Christchurch’s biggest assets up here, the Port Hills. I totally rate it. I’ve just done a 300 metre climb and this is my reward, coffee and a date scone!”
